Early Life and Education
Born into poverty on June 7, 1951, in Nassau, Philip Davis spent his early childhood on Cat Island with his brother, grandmother, and grandfather. He attended Old Bight Public School there before returning to Nassau to complete his education at Eastern Schools and St. John's College.
Political Career
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of WorksDavis entered politics in 2002 as a Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) member of Parliament for the Cat Island, Rum Cay, and San Salvador constituency. Following the PLP's victory in the 2012 elections, he was appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Works and Urban Development under Perry Christie.
Leader of the Progressive Liberal Party
After the party's defeat in the 2017 elections, Davis was elected leader of the PLP at the party's October 2017 convention. He became a Queen's Counsel (QC) in 2015.
Prime Minister
On September 16, 2021, Davis led the PLP to victory in the general elections and was sworn in as Prime Minister of The Bahamas.
Accomplishments as Minister of Works
As Minister of Works and Urban Development, from 2012 to 2017, Davis oversaw the provision of indoor toilets and potable water to approximately 1,000 homes in the Family Islands and New Providence. He also supervised infrastructure development throughout the islands, including road construction, seawall restoration, lighting of Family Island airports, and repairs to hurricane-damaged buildings and docks. Notably, he established the Urban Renewal Small Home Repairs Program, which assisted over 1,000 homeowners and engaged thousands of contractors and tradespeople.
Personal Life
Davis is married to Ann-Marie Davis and is the father of six children. He is a practicing Anglican and enjoys baseball, softball, and swimming.
