Prime Minister of Saint Lucia

Philip J. Pierre has served as Prime Minister of Saint Lucia since July 28, 2021. He is a prominent statesman and politician in the country.

Early Life and Education

Born into a family of educators and law enforcement, Philip Pierre's mother was a schoolteacher, while his father was a police officer. He attended St. Mary's College and pursued higher education at the University of the West Indies, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors in economics and a Master of Business Administration degree.

Professional Career

After completing his studies, Pierre worked as a lecturer at St. Mary's College and served as a management trainee at J.Q. Charles Ltd. He then held positions as an audit clerk at PricewaterhouseCoopers and PKF International, and as financial controller at Stanthur Co. Ltd. From 1985 to 1994, he directed the National Research and Development Corporation. Additionally, he founded and operated his own consulting firm, Philip J. Pierre Business Services Ltd., from 1990 to 1997.

Political Career

Pierre's political journey commenced in 1985 when he joined the Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP). He served as party treasurer from 1986 to 1992. In 1992, he made his first electoral bid in Castries East but was unsuccessful. He chaired the SLP from 1992 to 1996 and ran again in 1997, securing victory. In the subsequent government led by Kenny Anthony, he held the portfolio of Minister of Tourism, Civil Aviation, and International Financial Services from 1997 to 2000.

Re-elected to Parliament from Castries East in subsequent elections (2001, 2006, 2011), Pierre was sworn in as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure, Port Services, and Transport in 2011. Despite retaining his seat in the 2016 general election, the SLP lost, leading to Kenny Anthony's resignation as party leader. Pierre was elected as his successor on June 18, 2016, becoming the parliamentary leader of the opposition.

Prime Ministership

Pierre led the SLP into the 2021 general election, which resulted in a majority victory. On July 28, 2021, he took the oath of office as Prime Minister of Saint Lucia.

Affiliations and Memberships

Prime Minister Pierre is a member of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association. He also participates in the Caribbean Community Assembly of Parliamentarians, having first attended its inaugural meeting on Barbados in 1996.
