Philipp Krementz: A German Cardinal and Archbishop

Early Life and Education

Born in the year 1819, Philipp Krementz was ordained a priest in 1844 and spent two years pursuing theological studies in Rome.

Bishop and Archbishop of Ermland

In 1867, Krementz was appointed Bishop of Ermland. He attended the Vatican Council and initially opposed its decisions, but later submitted and condemned the Old Catholics. In 1872, he was stripped of his ecclesiastical revenues for opposing the May Laws, a measure that was reversed in 1883.

Archbishop of Cologne

In 1886, Krementz was promoted to Archbishop of Cologne. During his tenure, he played an active role in the ecclesiastical affairs of Prussia.

Cardinalate

On January 16, 1893, Krementz was elevated to the rank of Cardinal-Priest, with the title of the Church of San Crisogono.

Krementz was also a prolific writer, producing numerous theological works, including:
