Early Life and Education
Phillipa Soo was born on May 31, 1990, in Libertyville, Illinois. She is of mixed Chinese and American ancestry, with her father being of Chinese descent and her mother being an American of Western European origin. Soo's mother instilled in her a love of the arts from a young age, taking her to various theatrical productions. Soo began learning the piano and taking voice lessons, but ultimately pursued acting, attending the prestigious Juilliard School.
Musical Theater Breakthrough
Soo's career took a major leap after graduating from Juilliard when she landed the role of Natasha Rostova in Dave Malloy's "Natasha, Pierre & Great Comet of 1812," based on Leo Tolstoy's novel "War and Peace." Her captivating performance earned her Drama League and Lucille Lortel Award nominations, which caught the attention of director Thomas Kail.
Kail cast Soo in his historic musical "Hamilton," which became a Broadway juggernaut upon its release. Soo's portrayal of Eliza Schuyler Hamilton earned her critical acclaim, with many calling her one of the "most promising newcomers" and awarding her a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. "Hamilton" also won a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album in 2016.
After the immense success of "Hamilton," Soo starred in the title role of "Amélie," based on the 2001 French film. She performed alongside Adam Chanler-Berat, Manoel Felciano, and Tony Sheldon at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles and later on Broadway at the Walter Kerr Theatre, receiving two Drama Desk Award nominations for her performance.
Film and Television
Alongside her theater work, Soo has also appeared in numerous television shows and films. She had a recurring role as Lexi in the NBC musical drama "Smash" (2013) and voiced Moana in the Disney animated film "Moana" (2016).
Soo starred alongside Sarah Jessica Parker in the musical drama "Best Day of My Life" (2018) and played a recurring role in the TV series "The Code" (2019). She reprised her role as Eliza Schuyler Hamilton in the Disney+ live taping of "Hamilton" (2020), earning an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie.
Personal Life
Soo married actor Steven Pasquale in 2017, after meeting him through their mutual friend and "Hamilton" co-star Jonathan Groff. The couple frequently work together, starring alongside each other in "The Code" and "B Positive." Soo is vocal about her love for Pasquale on social media.
Recent Projects
Despite the challenges of the pandemic, Soo remained active in both theater and film in 2022. She starred alongside Jenn Colella in the off-Broadway musical "Suffs," composed by Shaina Taub, and premiered in the Hulu series "Shining Girls," based on Lauren Beukes' 2013 novel.
