Pier Francesco Tosi: Italian Virtuoso

Birth and Musical Lineage

Pier Francesco Tosi (1653-1732) was born in Cesena, Italy, to Giuseppe Felice Tosi, a renowned composer and organist. As was customary for promising vocalists of the era, young Tosi was castrated prior to puberty, preserving his soprano voice with its exceptional range and purity.

Singing Career and Controversies

From 1676 to 1685, Tosi performed in the choir of Milan Cathedral. However, his career was marred by an incident of misconduct, leading to his expulsion from the cathedral. Despite this setback, Tosi established himself as a celebrated soprano in London (1693), Vienna (early 1700s), and Italy (1720s).

Vocal Virtuosity and Renown

Tosi's singing was characterized by its expressive power, aristocratic elegance, and flawless vocal technique. He became highly renowned throughout Europe, inspiring admiration for his artistry.

Pedagogical Legacy

Beyond his acclaimed singing career, Tosi achieved lasting fame as a vocal pedagogue and music theorist. His magnum opus, "Opinioni de' cantori antichi e moderni..." (1723), became the indispensable guidebook for vocal training in the 18th and 19th centuries.

"Opinioni de' cantori"

Tosi's treatise emphasized the importance of clear articulation, correct posture, and diligent practice. He advocated for the study of Latin to improve pronunciation and advised singers to practice before mirrors to monitor their facial expressions.

Theoretical Insights

Tosi delved deeply into the technicalities of vocal performance, particularly the seamless blending of registers. He believed that vocal mastery could only be achieved through a smooth transition between high and low notes. His theories significantly influenced the vocal development of many singers, especially castrati.

Composer and Priest

In addition to his accomplishments as a singer and pedagogue, Tosi composed an oratorio "Il martirio di Santa Caterina" and several arias and cantatas. In his later years, he became an ordained priest, serving in Italy during the 1730s.
