Biography of Pier Gerlofs Donia

Pier Gerlofs Donia was born in 1480 in Kimswerd, Friesland, Netherlands, into a wealthy family. He was one of four children and had a passion for learning from a young age. As he grew older, Pier purchased his own home and got married. He and his wife had a son named Gerlof and a daughter named Wobbel. Life seemed to be going well for Pier until January 1515, when several pirate ships arrived in the village where he lived. These pirates were fighting on the side of Emperor Charles V and demanded tribute from the peaceful villagers. They broke into Pier's home, raped and killed his wife and children, and stole all their valuables and money. The fire they left behind destroyed everything else, leaving Donia without a family, money, or a home.

A Pirate and Fighter for his Rights

Under these circumstances, Pier Gerlofs Donia was forced to become a pirate and a fighter for his freedom. He formed his own band, known as the "Arumer Zwarte Hoop," and took up arms to seek revenge for his family and ruined life. In the first few months, he and other pirates focused on capturing small trading and military ships, recruiting them to their side. Once their fleet was equipped, they decided to take on the Dutch, who had failed to protect his family. In just a few hours, Pier and his pirates captured 28 Dutch ships, despite being significantly outnumbered. However, their initial mission of avenging his family gave way to plundering and mass murder. Donia spread his fleet over hundreds of miles, using a "signal ship" technique. When one ship spotted enemy vessels, it signaled the others, and they immediately sailed to assist.

Pier began calling himself the "King of Friesland." In 1519, he quietly retired from piracy, and a year later, on October 18, 1520, he passed away in Sneek.

The Legend Lives On

Pier Gerlofs Donia's legend lives on, with tales of his incredible strength. It is known that he stood over two meters tall and had a large build. His favorite sword is displayed in a museum in his hometown, measuring 2.15 meters long and weighing 7 kilograms. It is said that during battles, Pier never singled out one enemy but, in a frenzy, swung his sword, taking the lives of several foes with each stroke.

Even centuries after his death, he has not been forgotten. For example, the rugby team "Greate Pier" is named in his honor. Recently, a television series called "Floris" was also created, which tells the story of Pier's life and fate.
