Political Career
Harmel entered the political arena in 1946, serving as a federal parliamentary deputy for the Christian People's Party until 1971. He held several ministerial positions, including Minister of Education (1950-1954), Minister of Justice (1958), Minister of Culture (1958-1960), and Minister of State Service (1960-1961).
Prime Minister of Belgium
In 1965, Harmel reached the pinnacle of his political career by becoming Prime Minister of Belgium. During his premiership, he focused on promoting economic growth and social stability.
Foreign Minister
Following his time as Prime Minister, Harmel served as Belgium's Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1966 to 1973. In this role, he was instrumental in shaping Belgium's foreign policy and strengthening its international ties.
