Biography of Finnish Conductor and Violinist
Early Life and EducationBorn in Finland, Pekka Kuusisto emerged as a multi-talented musician, exhibiting exceptional abilities as both a violinist and conductor. He pursued his musical training at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, where he graduated in violin performance in 2003 and conducting in 2005. To further refine his violin skills, Kuusisto studied under the renowned pedagogue Zakhar Bron at the Cologne University of Music.
Orchestra Leadership and Guest Conducting
From 2008 to 2015, Kuusisto served as Music Director of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. Simultaneously, he assumed the position of Principal Guest Conductor of the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra from September 2009. His conducting repertoire extended to opera, where he led productions at the Finnish National Opera and the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels.
Discography and Recording Achievements
Kuusisto has released a series of critically acclaimed albums featuring the works of Finnish composers such as Jan Sibelius and Einojuhani Rautavaara. He has also recorded a collection of arias and interludes from Richard Wagner's operas with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.
Appointment to the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie
In 2017, Kuusisto was appointed as Chief Conductor of the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern (DRP), a position he has held until 2021. Under his leadership, the orchestra has achieved international recognition for its exceptional musical performances.
