Biography of Pieter Aertsen

Pieter Aertsen (1508 or 1509-1575) was a Dutch painter who played a significant role in the development of genre painting and still life in European art. He was born in Amsterdam and was buried there on June 3, 1575. Aertsen worked in Amsterdam and Antwerp from 1535 to 1555.

Aertsen is considered one of the pioneers of the democratic genre in the art of the Netherlands. He combined elements influenced by Italian Mannerism, such as emphasized monumentality of figures, elongated proportions, affected gestures and poses, and sharp spatial shifts, with the traditions of early Netherlandish painting that revealed the inner dignity of everyday objects, showing an interest in still life elements.

His genre motifs in religious scenes, such as "Christ in the House of Martha and Mary" (1559, Museum of Ancient Art, Brussels), and his purely genre compositions, like "The Kitchen Maid" (1559, Museum of Ancient Art, Brussels), often incorporated moralizing symbolism reflecting the tension of the religious and social struggles in the Netherlands of the 16th century.
