Life and Education

Dutch physician and naturalist Peter Boddaert graduated from Utrecht University, where he went on to teach from 1764 onwards.

Correspondence and Acquaintances

Boddaert maintained a correspondence with the renowned botanist Carl Linnaeus, with 14 of his letters still extant. He was also closely acquainted with Albert Schlosser, and left behind a description of his extensive collection of curiosities.

Contributions to Zoological Nomenclature

In 1783, Boddaert published an index to Edme Louis Daubenton's "Planches Enluminées." Influenced by Linnaeus, he proposed binomial nomenclature for the species described by Buffon, many of which are still in use today.

"Elenchus Animalium" and New Binomials

In his 1785 work "Elenchus Animalium," Boddaert introduced binomial names for several mammals for the first time, including the quagga and the tarpan.
