The Early Life of Pieter Lastman

Pieter Lastman was a Dutch painter born in Amsterdam in 1583. According to Karel van Mander's book, Lastman apprenticed with the artist Gerrit Pietersz Sweelink. Upon completing his apprenticeship, he embarked on a journey to Italy, spending time in Rome and Venice.

Inspirations in Italy

In Italy, Lastman encountered the work of Caravaggio and became acquainted with a circle of artists centered around Adam Elsheimer. His exposure to Italian art greatly influenced his own style.

Return to Amsterdam and Early Career

Lastman returned to Amsterdam in 1607 and quickly established himself as a prominent painter of historical subjects. His early works, such as "The Flight into Egypt" (1606) and "Odysseus and Nausicaa" (1610), showcase his ability to combine biblical and mythological narratives with picturesque landscapes.

Patronage and Recognition

Lastman's popularity grew rapidly, and he maintained a well-established workshop, selling his paintings at high prices. In 1618, he was recognized as the foremost painter in his hometown of Amsterdam.

Influence on Future Masters

Lastman played a pivotal role in the development of Dutch painting. In 1619, he took on Jan Lievens as an apprentice, and in 1625, Rembrandt studied with Lastman for six months, learning about composition and historical narrative painting.
