Biography of Pietro Cavallini
Pietro Cavallini (circa 1250–1330) was an Italian painter and mosaicist of the Proto-Renaissance period. He was born in Rome around 1250. Although many works are attributed to him, only the mosaics in the apse of the Santa Maria in Trastevere church in Rome and a significant part of the fresco composition of the Last Judgment in the Santa Cecilia in Trastevere church (circa 1293) have survived to the present day. The vibrant colors of this fresco have been preserved almost in their original form.
Works
Cavallini's mosaics in the Santa Maria in Trastevere church (circa 1291) depict the Madonna and Child on a throne, as well as five scenes from her life. According to documentary evidence, in 1308 Cavallini worked in Naples, where a large portion of the fresco decoration in the Santa Maria Donnaregina church was executed in a style similar to his own.
Legacy
Pietro Cavallini passed away in 1330, leaving behind a body of work that showcases his talent as a painter and mosaicist. His contributions to the Proto-Renaissance movement have had a lasting impact on the art world, with his vibrant colors and expressive style influencing future generations of artists.
