Pietro Parolin: A Life in Service to the Holy See
Early Life and Diplomatic CareerPietro Parolin was born on January 17, 1955, in Schio, Italy. He was ordained a priest on April 27, 1980. In 1986, at the age of 31, he entered the Vatican's diplomatic service and served as a diplomat for 20 years. His postings included the apostolic nunciatures in Nigeria and Mexico.
Deputy Secretary for Relations with States
On November 30, 2002, Monsignor Parolin was appointed Deputy Secretary for Relations with States, serving under Archbishops Torán, Lajolo, and Mamberti. He played a central role in the Vatican's efforts to promote the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, calling it "a foundation for pursuing nuclear disarmament" and "an essential element for the further development of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes."
Vietnam Negotiations
Monsignor Parolin also represented the Vatican in delicate diplomatic missions, including visits to North Korea and Vietnam. In 2009, he led negotiations with the Vietnamese government that aimed to establish formal diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Apostolic Nuncio to Venezuela
On August 17, 2009, Pope Benedict XVI appointed Monsignor Parolin as Apostolic Nuncio to Venezuela and Titular Archbishop of Acquapendente. The appointment came at a time of heightened tensions between the state and the Church in Venezuela.
Secretary of State of the Holy See
On August 31, 2013, Pope Francis appointed Pietro Parolin, Titular Archbishop of Acquapendente and Apostolic Nuncio to Venezuela, as the new Secretary of State of the Holy See. He assumed his post on October 15, 2013. At 58, he was the youngest Secretary of State since Cardinal Eugenio Pacelli, who became Secretary of State at the age of 54.
Cardinalate
As expected, Parolin was created a cardinal on February 22, 2014. On June 28, 2018, Pope Francis elevated him to the rank of Cardinal-Bishop with the titular church of Santi Simone e Giuda Taddeo a Torre Angela.
