Early Life and Diplomatic Career

Pietro Parolin was born on January 17, 1955, in Schio, Italy. He was ordained a priest on April 27, 1980. In 1986, at the age of 31, he entered the Vatican's diplomatic service and served as a diplomat for 20 years. His postings included the apostolic nunciatures in Nigeria and Mexico.

Deputy Secretary for Relations with States

On November 30, 2002, Monsignor Parolin was appointed Deputy Secretary for Relations with States, serving under Archbishops Torán, Lajolo, and Mamberti.
