Blessed Priest and Martyr
Piotr Edward Dankowski, a blessed figure within the Roman Catholic Church, was a devout priest who endured persecution and martyrdom in the annals of history.
Education and Ordination
Dankowski's journey began in 1926 when he enrolled in the Seminary in Kraków, concurrently pursuing studies at the Jagiellonian University. His unwavering faith culminated in his ordination to the priesthood on February 1, 1931.
Parochial Service and Educational Endeavors
After his ordination, Dankowski served as a vicar in various parishes: Paszkówka (1931-1932), Sucha Beskidzka (1932-1935), and Zakopane (1935-1941). In addition to his pastoral duties, he dedicated himself to pedagogy, teaching at the local high school in Zakopane.
Resistance and Persecution
The outbreak of World War II brought forth a new chapter in Dankowski's life. Alongside his brother, Stanisław, he actively engaged in listening to Allied broadcasts and distributing leaflets in defiance of the occupying forces. This courageous resistance led to his arrest on May 10, 1941.
Tarnów Imprisonment and Auschwitz
Dankowski was initially incarcerated in the Tarnów prison, where he endured brutal torture. In December 1941, he was transferred to the notorious Auschwitz concentration camp, where he met his demise on April 3, 1942. His concentration camp number was 24529.
Beatification and Legacy
On June 13, 1999, Piotr Edward Dankowski was beatified by Pope John Paul II, alongside other Polish martyrs of World War II. Their enduring witness to faith amidst adversity continues to inspire generations of Catholics. The feast day of Blessed Piotr Edward Dankowski is celebrated on June 12th in the Roman Catholic Church.
