A Prominent Jurist in the International Arena
Early Life and EducationBorn in Poznań, Poland, in 1956, Piotr Hofmański embarked on his legal career after graduating from the Faculty of Law at Nicolaus Copernicus University in 1978. He subsequently obtained a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1981 and a Doctor of Law degree in 1990.
Academic Career
Hofmański dedicated a significant portion of his career to academia. From 1990 to 2002, he served as a Professor of Criminal Law at the University of Białystok, where he imparted knowledge in criminal law and criminal procedure. In 2003, he became the Head of the Department of Criminal Procedure at the Jagiellonian University.
Judicial Journey
Hofmański's journey into the judicial realm began in 1996 when he was appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court of Poland. He served in this capacity until 2015. Concurrently, he served as an Advisor to the Council of Europe.
International Criminal Court
In 2014, Hofmański was elected as a Judge of the International Criminal Court (ICC) on behalf of the Eastern European States group. In 2015, he assumed the role of Judge of the ICC.
ICC Presidency
On March 11, 2021, Hofmański was elected as the President of the ICC. He is responsible for overseeing the court's operations and ensuring its impartiality and effectiveness in addressing international crimes.
Scholarly Contributions
Hofmański is a prolific author, having penned over 300 publications on various aspects of criminal law, criminal procedure, international criminal cooperation, and human rights. His work has gained recognition both in his native Polish and in English and German.
