Early Life and EducationBorn in Paris to academic parents, Christine Lagarde (née Lallouette) spent her early years between the classrooms of her English-professor father and the lecture halls where her mother taught. A gifted athlete, she became a member of the French national synchronized swimming team. In 1974, she graduated from high school and was awarded a scholarship to attend a girls' school in Bethesda, Maryland, USA. This year abroad deepened her understanding of her own culture and sparked her interest in international cooperation.
Upon her return to France, Lagarde pursued a law degree at Paris West University Nanterre La Défense and a master's degree in political science at the Institut d'Études Politiques d'Aix-en-Provence. She later became a member of the Institute's board of directors.
Legal and Political Career
In 1974, Lagarde interned at the United States Capitol, where she assisted William Cohen and played a role in negotiations related to the Watergate hearings. In 1981, she joined the international law firm Baker & McKenzie in Chicago, where she specialized in antitrust and labor law. Within six years, she became a full partner and later led the firm's Western Europe operations. In 1995, she joined the firm's executive committee, and in October 1999, she became its first female chairman. From 2004, Lagarde chaired the firm's global strategy committee.
As Minister of Trade and Economy
Returning to French politics in 2005, Lagarde was appointed Minister for Trade. She focused on creating new markets for French goods, particularly in the technology sector. In May 2007, she became Minister for Agriculture and then Minister for the Economy in June.
Director-General of the International Monetary Fund
On July 5, 2011, Lagarde was elected as the 11th Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), becoming the first woman to hold the position. Under her leadership, the IMF played a crucial role in addressing global economic crises, including the Eurozone sovereign debt crisis.
Personal Life and Accolades
Lagarde is divorced and has two sons. She is currently in a relationship with Marseille entrepreneur Xavier Giocanti. A vegetarian who abstains from alcohol, Lagarde enjoys swimming, scuba diving, and gardening.
In 2011, Forbes magazine ranked Lagarde as the 9th most powerful woman in the world. She is widely recognized for her leadership, intelligence, and commitment to promoting global economic stability.
