Poon Lim: A Chinese Sailor's Miraculous Survival
Early Life and Wartime ServicePoon Lim was born in Hainan, China in 1918. In 1942, amidst the turmoil of World War II, he served as a crewman on the British merchant ship 'SS Ben Lomond,' which was en route from Cape Town to Surinam.
Tragic Attack and Survival
On November 23, 1942, German submarine U-172 torpedoed the 'SS Ben Lomond.' The ship sank rapidly, claiming the lives of the captain and 52 of the crew. Lim managed to don a life jacket and leap overboard before an exploding boiler sealed the vessel's fate.
Lonely Drift Afloat
Lim clambered onto a life raft that had floated free from the wreckage. He found it stocked with emergency supplies, including water, biscuits, sugar, and flares. As he set adrift, he had no idea how long he would be alone on the vast ocean.
Enduring Challenges
Weeks turned into months as Lim drifted in solitude. To conserve his dwindling provisions, he began collecting rainwater and devising ingenious ways to catch fish. He even resorted to drinking the blood of a captured bird to stay hydrated. Sharks became both a threat and an unexpected source of sustenance.
Near-Misses and Hope
Twice, Lim was spotted by passing ships. However, in one case, a storm intervened, and in the other, he suspected racial prejudice may have caused him to be ignored. Despite his setbacks, he clung to the belief that rescue would come.
Landfall and Recovery
In early April 1943, Lim sensed land was near by the changing color of the ocean. On April 5th, he was spotted by Brazilian fishermen who carried him to Belém, Brazil, where he received medical attention.
An American Life
After the war, Lim desired to settle in the United States but initially faced resistance. However, he eventually leveraged his remarkable story and the assistance of an American senator to gain entry. He resided in New York City until his death in 1991.
Unbroken Record and Legacy
Poon Lim's 133-day survival at sea remains an unparalleled feat. He lost only 9 kilograms in weight and was remarkably agile upon his rescue. His indomitable spirit and resourcefulness serve as an enduring inspiration.
