Origins"Пошлая Молли," a Ukrainian youth band, skyrocketed to fame within a year of their inception. Without any television appearances, promotion by renowned producers, or substantial financial backing, the group captivates thousands of spectators in concert halls across Ukraine and Russia. Their success is not a fleeting trend; they epitomize the power of "Generation Social Media," propelled by likes and reposts.
Lineup
The mastermind behind "Пошлая Молли" is Kirill Timoshenko, the band's frontman, songwriter, and lyricist, better known by his stage name Kirill Belyy. The remaining members of the trio fluctuate frequently, with the band barely having time to establish cohesive collaborations. The band's debut music video featured model Yana Kryukova, while subsequent videos introduced Valeria Karaman and Ivan Voronenko.
Early Life
Kirill was born on March 31, 1997, in the provincial town of Zmiev, Kharkiv Oblast. With limited entertainment options, Kirill's formative years were spent with friends on the streets. He listened to a diverse range of music, often without noting the names of bands or artists. As a result, his work today incorporates influences from various genres. Kirill cites Kurt Cobain, Eminem, Bring Me the Horizon, and Mindless Self Indulgence as particularly significant.
Adolescence and Artistic Beginnings
As a teenager, Kirill experimented with rap music, recording tracks on his phone and longing for the day when his voice would deepen. However, he eventually realized his true calling was as a rock musician and picked up the guitar. He continued to explore different avenues and earned the nickname "Belyy" at age 14 after trying marijuana for the first time. Drug use and its negative consequences feature prominently in the lyrics of "Пошлая Молли."
After graduating high school, Kirill's parents enrolled him in a technical school. However, his education devolved into paying off teachers, and he soon abandoned it to focus on his music.
Inspiration and Audience
The titular "Molly" refers to the band's target audience: a 15-year-old schoolgirl yearning for adult experiences but still forbidden from them. "Пошлая Молли"'s music gives voice to these desires, echoing the sentiments expressed by Viktor Tsoi in his 1982 song "Vosmiklassnitsa."
Musical Journey
Kirill uploaded his first composition, "Lyubimaya Pesnya Tvoey Sestry," online on February 14, 2016. It quickly became a hit. The second single, "TMSTS" (an abbreviation for "Tvoya Mladshaya Sestrenka Takaya-Syakaya"), also resonated with listeners by addressing common teenage concerns through humorous lyrics. The release of the single "Khanna Montana" in October marked the band's first live performance, attracting a modest crowd of 20, mostly consisting of Kirill's friends.
Over time, Kirill gained experience and confidence, buoyed by a growing following on YouTube and social media. His performances began to draw larger crowds, and his songs found their way into the hands of Gleb, the administrator of the popular "Vechno 17" group. Gleb recognized the band's potential and became their manager.
Within a year, Kirill had written eight songs for their debut EP, "8 Sposobov Kak Brosit Drochit." Surprisingly, the most popular track on the album was "Non-stop," a remix of the Reflex band's song. "Пошлая Молли"'s version featured a drastically altered arrangement and a rearranged song structure. Kirill's lyrics blended themes of rebellion, alcohol, and drugs with infectious melodies.
The band's genre has been described as indie rock, unconventional pop-rock, and a fusion of rap, rock, and electronic music. Their album was categorized as "Alternative Music/Indie" on the Play Market. Major online communities like "Rifmy i Panchi," MDK, and The Flow took notice of the band, further fueling their popularity.
In summer 2017, "Пошлая Молли" released their first music video for "Lyubimaya Pesnya Tvoey Sestry," a beloved fan favorite.
On January 30, 2018, the band released their second EP, "Grustnaya Devchonka s Glazami Kak u Sobaki." The six-song album showcased a more mature and polished sound. The title track explores the theme of a sad dog, as Kirill later revealed the album was dedicated to a secret girlfriend.
February 2018 saw the release of their third official music video, "Tipichnaya Vecherinka s Basseynom." The video depicts high schoolers partying, experimenting with sex (behind closed doors), and bullying one of their group. The band also shared live concert footage online, where Kirill often covered other artists' songs, given their limited original repertoire.
Present and Controversies
In January 2019, "Пошлая Молли" became the center of a conflict between Artem Zverev and Yevgeny Gorenburg. Gorenburg had invited the band to perform at the "Stary Novy Rok" festival in Yekaterinburg, but Zverev, the artistic director of the "Dom Pechati" nightclub, accused Gorenburg of hypocrisy since he had previously condemned the band's performances, claiming their fees supported the war in Ukraine.
"Пошлая Молли" continues to tour Russia, drawing controversy as they go. Their concert in Stavropol on March 4, 2019, was delayed by three hours, leaving school-age fans waiting anxiously for Kirill Belyy's appearance. The concert itself lasted only half an hour, but ended abruptly when an enraged Belyy smashed the equipment and stormed offstage.
In an interview with vDud on YouTube on March 7, 2019, Belyy was asked what he would say to Putin if they met. He responded with a theatrical pause of half a minute before answering. When questioned about his personal life, Kirill admitted to never having participated in group sex.
