Origins and Formation

In 2003, members of the stoner rock band Red Aim envisioned a new project with a unique blend of Christian themes, dark choral arrangements, and organ parts. They adopted pseudonyms and fabricated a backstory: Charles and Matthew Greywolf decided to form a band after years of playing together. Drummer Stefan Funébre and keyboardist Falk Maria Schlegel soon joined, but the lineup lacked a suitable vocalist.

While composing lyrics and music in Romania, Charles and Matthew encountered Attila Dorn at a pub in Sighișoara. Dorn, a classically trained opera singer from Bucharest, relocated to Saarbrücken and became Powerwolf's frontman.

Debut Album and Iconic Style

In 2005, the band released their debut album, "Return in Bloodred," featuring Dorn's fascination with Romanian werewolf legends. The album's lyrics combined overt darkness and mysticism with uplifting harmonies, a nod to Red Aim's legacy of irreverence.

"Lupus Dei" (2007) introduced the concept of a werewolf, exploring its path from bloodlust to enlightenment. To enhance the atmosphere, Powerwolf recorded parts in a twelfth-century church. Matthew described the album as a metaphor for their passion for heavy metal.

Lineup Changes and "Bible of the Beast"

Stefan Funébre departed in 2010, replaced by Tom Diener. Diener was later replaced by Dutch drummer Roel van Helden in May 2011.

Powerwolf's third album, "Bible of the Beast" (2009), solidified their signature sound. It featured a choir of students and alumni from Hochschule für Musik Saar, combining organ, chorus, and Dorn's vocals.

"Blood of the Saints" and Napalm Records

Tom Diener was replaced by Roel van Helden in 2011. The band's fourth album, "Blood of the Saints" (2011), involved over 70 individuals and was recorded in five studios and two churches. Powerwolf signed with Napalm Records in 2012.

"Preachers of the Night" and Chart Success

The EP "The Rockhard Sacrament" (2013) and the single "Amen & Attack" preceded the release of "Preachers of the Night" (2013). The album's central theme was the Crusades, and it reached number one on the German charts.

"Blessed & Possessed"

"Blessed & Possessed" (2015) featured the singles "Army of the Night" and "Armata Strigoi." It was produced by Jens Bogren, and its cover art was once again created by guitarist Matthew Greywolf. A limited edition included a cover album, "Metallum Nostrum," featuring renditions of songs by Judas Priest, Running Wild, and others.

"The Sacrament of Sin"

Powerwolf's seventh album, "The Sacrament of Sin" (2018), saw them delve deeper into their thematic repertoire. A limited edition included cover versions of Powerwolf songs by bands of their choosing. "The Sacrament of Sin" won Metal Hammer magazine's "Album of the Year" award in 2018.

"Best of the Blessed" and Future Projects

In 2020, Powerwolf released "Best of the Blessed," a compilation of their greatest hits. They embarked on a Latin American tour with Amon Amarth, which was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The band is working on a new album, scheduled for release in 2021.

Musical Style

Powerwolf's music combines power and traditional heavy metal elements with gothic influences and black metal aesthetics (such as corpse paint). They also make extensive use of church organ and choir sounds.

Lyrical themes often revolve around religion, vampires, and werewolves. While they address religious topics, they assert that they sing about, not for, religion, and their true faith lies in metal.

Their sound features traditional power metal riffs, tight bass and drumwork, and operatic vocals. Guitar solos are less frequent, and the band often incorporates a choir to add atmosphere and grandeur.
