Prabhat Patnaik: A Marxist Economist of Global Renown
Prabhat Patnaik, an Indian economist and political commentator, has gained prominence for his incisive and often critical analyses of various political and economic systems, particularly through the lens of Karl Marx's theories.
Early Life and Education
Born in Jatni, Orissa, India, Patnaik received his early education in his hometown before moving to Daly College in Indore, where he studied on a government scholarship. He completed his Bachelor's degree in Economics at St. Stephen's College in Delhi and later pursued a Rhodes Scholarship at Oxford University, where he obtained both his Bachelor's and Doctorate in Philosophy degrees.
Academic Career
In 1969, Patnaik joined the Faculty of Economics and Politics of the University of Cambridge and was subsequently elected a Fellow of Clare College, Cambridge. Returning to India in 1974, he became an Assistant Professor at the newly established Centre for Economic Studies and Planning (CESP) of Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi. By 1983, he had become a full Professor and continued teaching at CESP until his retirement in 2010, when he held the JRD Tata Chair of Planning and Development.
Research and Publications
Patnaik's research interests lie primarily in macroeconomics and political economy. He has authored several acclaimed scholarly works, including 'Time, Inflation and Growth', 'Economics and Egalitarianism', 'Accumulation and Stability Under Capitalism', 'The Retreat to Unfreedom', 'The Value of Money', and 'Re-envisioning Socialism'.
Editorial Contributions
Patnaik has served as the Editor of 'Social Scientist', a prestigious academic journal that has gained significant recognition under his leadership.
Personal Life
Prabhat Patnaik is married to Utsa Patnaik, who also served as a faculty member at the Centre for Economic Studies and Planning.
