When you are born into a family of actors, you really can't escape the path. Purbi Joshi was introduced to theater at a young age thanks to her father, Praveen Joshi (a renowned theater director), and her mother, Sarita Joshi (a graduate of Sangeet Academy, and a film actress). "I always wanted to be an actress, so I was never interested in studying," jokes Purbi. From a young age, Purbi had the opportunity to observe her parents and her sister Ketaki Dave at work. "And I always wondered when I would start acting in front of the camera," reminisces Purbi. Spending most of her childhood behind the scenes, she learned all the nuances of acting, directing, and theater. Once she turned 10, she began modeling for various brands such as Shogun Tissues, Wintershield Cream, Thomson TV, Iodex, Liberty Footwear, Johnson & Johnson. As a model, Purbi became more familiar with the camera and was ready to conquer the small screen. In 1995, Purbi landed her first role in Faasle and also appeared in the comedy "Take it Easy". "I love comedies, and I really enjoyed working on 'Take it Easy'," explains Purbi. When she participated in the ABCL talent contest, she was selected among the top ten. She recalls, "We had a great time in Bangalore and learned a lot there. I was disappointed when ABCL ceased to exist thereafter." However, Purbi received offers for Shenai from UTV, which was number one on Star Plus. She also appeared in several episodes of "Paanch" and currently plays one of the sisters in "Mehendi Tere Naam Ki" on Zee. The latter made her a well-known face in the film industry. But it was with "Dishayen" that Purbi's star hour struck. "I am so glad that I got the opportunity to play twin sisters in the first double role on the small screen. As an actress, I feel fulfilled," she says. How did she get the coveted role? She recalls, "I had previously worked with Sundeep Dara in Shenai, and we remained on good terms. One fine day, Sundeep called me and asked me to audition. A few weeks later, I found out that I had been cast for the roles of Neha and Nikita. We were all very excited because such a project was being done for the first time. Initially, it was difficult, but once we understood the technique, it became easy for everyone." But playing both roles must have been tiring for the actress? "It was exhausting because I had to quickly change appearances," confesses the actress. But her effort paid off as the series gained immense popularity among viewers. "We received many letters from fans from all over. Producers Hasmukh Shah, Narendra Kessar, and Sundeep Dara did their job very effectively. In fact, the whole team worked well," she says. Does the actress feel she is at the peak of her career, or is she not getting much recognition? "Reaching the top makes an actor very popular among the masses, but being on a satellite channel, everyone gets recognition in the film industry, which is important for an actor," she reflects. What does the actress think of Dishayen? "Playing the twin sisters is a noble endeavor. Additionally, the characters are positive unlike in Hindi movies, where one plays the positive role and the other the negative one." How does she relate to the Dishayen sisters? She explains, "Playing Neha was very challenging because I had to be a typical obedient woman content with her family life. I had to work harder because in reality, I am quite talkative and open." Purbi also has a great sense of humor and is a movie lover. What does she think of television soap operas today? "Television became outdated almost 20 years ago. The regression in the series is truly tragic. I am glad that producers like Hasmukh Shah and Parvati Gopalan are trying to give family drama a new meaning," she says happily. To her great regret, Purbi Joshi could not continue to be part of the second season of the series "Dishayen" as she already had many contracts with other producers and physically couldn't manage to continue working on the show.
