Origin and Early Years

Qara Yusuf was the founder and leader of the Qara Qoyunlu confederacy, a prominent Turkmen dynasty in the 14th and 15th centuries. His father, Bayram Khoja, was an emir under the Jalayirid ruler Sheikh Uways. The Qara Qoyunlu primarily inhabited Azerbaijan, Western Armenia, and Iraq.

Rise to Power

Qara Muhammad, Qara Yusuf's brother, established a feudal state in the city of Va. However, they faced challenges from Timur's army, forcing them to flee westward to the Ottoman Empire under Bayazid I. In the Battle of Ankara (1402), Bayazid was defeated and captured, freeing the Qara Qoyunlu from pressure from the west and allowing Timur to return to Samarkand.

Qara Yusuf and his ally, Ahmed Jalayir, seized Baghdad in Timur's absence. However, conflicts led to Ahmed's departure, leaving Qara Yusuf in control. Defeated by the Timurids, he sought refuge in the Mamluk sultanate.

Struggle for Tabriz

After their defeat in Baghdad, Qara Yusuf and Ahmed Jalayir formed an alliance in Damascus. They agreed to divide Iraq and Azerbaijan between them. Ahmed captured Baghdad in 1406, but Qara Yusuf later breached the agreement and took the city.

In 1408, Qara Yusuf decisively defeated Timur's son, Miran Shah, at the Battle of Sardrud. He gained control of Tabriz and Iranian Azerbaijan. However, Ahmed Jalayir took advantage of Qara Yusuf's absence to recapture Tabriz. Qara Yusuf returned to defeat Ahmed in 1410, securing his hold on the city and executing Ahmed.

Expansion and Consolidation

By 1413, the Qara Qoyunlu realm had expanded to include much of Azerbaijan, Armenia, Kurdistan, and Iraq. Qara Yusuf established Tabriz as his capital and divided the territories among his sons as fiefdoms. Their main rivals were the Ak Koyunlu confederacy and the Timurid state under Shahrukh.

Qara Yusuf defeated the Ak Koyunlu in 1418 at the Battle of Qalat al-Rum. This victory allowed him to consolidate his power against an impending Timurid invasion.

Death and Legacy

In 1420, Qara Yusuf unexpectedly died while preparing to confront Shahrukh's approaching army. Despite his short reign, he left a significant mark on history by expanding the Qara Qoyunlu state and establishing its dominance in the region.
