Early Life and Career
At the tender age of three and a half, Hilary Hahn embarked on her violin journey. By the age of ten, she made her debut with the prestigious Chicago Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Erich Leinsdorf. As a teenager, she honed her skills by performing at weddings and family gatherings to earn a living.
International Recognition
In 1992, at the age of 17, Hahn achieved the extraordinary feat of becoming the youngest musician (and the first American) to win the prestigious Johann Sebastian Bach International Competition in Leipzig. This triumph propelled her to international recognition.
Tragic Accident and Recovery
In 1995, Hahn suffered devastating injuries in a railroad accident. Her hand, clutching her priceless Amatis violin, was caught in the closing doors of a commuter train, dragging her for over 100 meters. After nearly two years of rehabilitation, she successfully returned to the concert stage. In a landmark verdict, the railroad company was ordered to pay her a record-breaking $29 million.
Diverse Musical Pursuits
Hahn's discography spans a wide range of musical styles, predominantly chamber music. Her 1994 debut album showcased the music of Pablo Sarasate, accompanied by renowned pianist Samuel Sanders. Subsequent recordings included rare violin-piano works by Franz Liszt, solo violin music from the Baroque era, and duos for violin and cello with cellist Wendy Warner.
Chamber and Orchestral Collaborations
In addition to her solo performances, Hahn has formed chamber ensembles, including the Trio Settecento with cellist John Mark Rozendaal and pianist David Schrader. She has recorded concertos by Brahms and Joachim with orchestras and released an album of violin concertos by African American composers of the 18th and 19th centuries.
Metal Revolution
Alongside her classical career, Hahn has embraced the world of heavy metal. Since 2008, she has performed with the doom and thrash metal band Earthen Grave. In 2010, she gave a groundbreaking concert in Chicago's Millennium Park, where she performed Baroque pieces on a period violin, Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto on a classical violin, and metal compositions with Earthen Grave on a six-string electric violin.
