Early Life and Career
Radek Bonk was born in Uherske Hradiste, Czechoslovakia, and began his hockey career with HC Zlin. He made his debut in the Czechoslovakian league during the 1992/93 season.
North American Journey
In 1993, Bonk moved to North America and joined the Las Vegas Thunder of the International Hockey League (IHL). He had a stellar season, scoring 90 points (43 goals, 47 assists) in 81 games and was named IHL Rookie of the Year.
NHL Draft and Debut
Bonk was selected third overall by the Ottawa Senators in the 1994 NHL Draft. He made his NHL debut on January 22, 1995, and scored his first NHL goal against the Pittsburgh Penguins on January 27, 1995.
NHL Career
Bonk spent nine seasons with the Senators before being traded to the Montreal Canadiens in 2004. He had a successful NHL career, scoring 195 goals and 410 assists in 838 games.
Return to Europe
In 2009, Bonk signed with Lokomotiv Yaroslavl in Russia but was released after a few games. He then joined HC Ocelari Trinec in the Czech Extraliga and led the team to its first Extraliga championship in 2011 as captain.
Retirement and Legacy
Bonk retired from professional hockey after the 2013/14 season. He played a total of 1,528 games in his career, scoring 868 points (343 goals, 525 assists). In 2019, HC Ocelari Trinec retired Bonk's number 14 in honor of his contributions to the team.
International Career
Bonk represented the Czech Republic at several international tournaments, including the 1996 World Championship where he won a gold medal.
Personal Life
Bonk's nephew, Patrik Bartosak, is also a professional hockey player who currently plays for the Czech Republic national team. Bonk currently resides in Canada with his family.
