Early Years and Artistic Pursuits
Rafael Alberti was born in 1902 in El Puerto de Santa María, Spain. Initially an aspiring painter, he later embraced poetry and published his debut collection, "Marinero en tierra" (Sailor on Land), in 1924. His work was recognized with the National Literature Prize in 1925.
Literary Vanguard and the Generation of '27
Alberti's early poetry embraced the avant-garde and surrealism. In 1927, he co-founded the literary movement known as the Generation of '27, which included other notable writers such as Federico García Lorca and Luis Cernuda.
Political Activism and the Spanish Civil War
In 1931, Alberti joined the Communist Party of Spain. During the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), he became an ardent supporter of the Republican cause and used his writing to denounce fascism.
Exile and Homecoming
After the Republican defeat, Alberti went into exile in France and later in Argentina. He remained a vocal critic of the Franco regime and used his art to promote social and political change. He returned to Spain in 1977 following Franco's death.
