Robin Jefferson: An American Poet and Environmentalist

American poet, playwright, and natural philosopher Robinson Jeffers, hailed as the "greatest American poet of the 20th century" during his lifetime, became an iconic figure in environmentalism.

Early Life and Education

Born in Allegheny (now part of Pittsburgh), Pennsylvania, in 1887, Jeffers was the son of a Presbyterian minister. As a child prodigy, he excelled in classical art, Greek and Latin languages, and literature. He attended West Coast College in Los Angeles at the age of 16.

Medical Studies and Poetry Passion

After graduating from college, Jeffers pursued medical studies at the University of Southern California. There, he met his future wife, Una Kuster, and began writing poetry.

Focus on the Wild

In 1910, Jeffers switched to forestry studies in Seattle. However, his relationship with Una became a public scandal, culminating in a front-page article in the Los Angeles Times in 1912. The couple married in 1913 and moved to Carmel, California. Jeffers built his home, Tor House and Hawk Tower, where he became renowned for his powerful nature-themed poetry.

Environmentalism and Legacy

Jeffers's anti-bourgeois poetry resonated with counterculture movements in the 1950s and 1960s. His writings embraced the beauty of the wilderness and the destructive nature of human civilization. His work continues to inspire environmentalists and nature lovers worldwide.

Personal Life and Legacy

Jeffers's marriage to Una resulted in the birth of a daughter who died in infancy and twin sons. Una passed away from cancer in 1950, and Jeffers himself died in 1962. His poetry continues to be translated and read, solidifying his place as one of the most influential poets of the 20th century.
