Early Life and Education
Peter Weikert was born in Linz, Austria. He studied at the Bruckner Conservatory in Linz and the Vienna Conservatory under Hans Swarowsky.
Career
Weikert began his career as a conductor in 1965, winning the first prize in the Николай Malko Conducting Competition in Copenhagen. In 1974, he made his debut at the Vienna State Opera, followed by the Hamburg State Opera (1975), Deutsche Oper Berlin (1979), Bavarian State Opera (1981), and Metropolitan Opera (1987).
From 1971, he served as a regular conductor at the Salzburg Festival, Festival d'Aix-en-Provence, and Bregenz Festival. In 1987, he became a conductor at the Arena di Verona and Puccini Festival in Viareggio.
Weikert is particularly known for his interpretations of Rossini's operas, including "The Barber of Seville" and "The Italian Girl in Algiers." He has recorded and filmed numerous operas.
Teaching
Since September 2008, Weikert has been a professor of conducting at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts.
