Ralph Northam: Physician, Politician, and Governor of Virginia
Early Life and Military CareerRalph Northam was born and raised in Accomack County, Virginia. He graduated from Virginia Military Institute with a degree in biology and earned his medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School in 1984. Upon graduating, he joined the United States Army Medical Corps and served as a military physician until 1992.
Private Medical Practice and Political Beginnings
In 1992, Northam established his own private medical practice specializing in pediatric neurology. He practiced for over two decades, serving patients throughout Virginia. In 2007, he entered politics and was elected to the Virginia Senate, where he represented the 6th District from 2008 to 2013.
Lieutenant Governorship and Gubernatorial Run
In 2013, Northam was elected Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, running on a Democratic ticket with Governor-elect Terry McAuliffe. He served in this capacity until 2017, when he launched his campaign for Governor. In the Democratic primary, Northam defeated former Representative Tom Perriello to secure the party's nomination.
Election as Governor
In the 2017 gubernatorial election, Northam faced Republican candidate Ed Gillespie. Northam emerged victorious, receiving 54% of the vote. He was inaugurated as the 73rd Governor of Virginia on January 13, 2018.
Controversies and Leadership
Northam's tenure as Governor has been marked by both controversy and significant achievements. In February 2019, a scandal erupted after a photograph from Northam's medical school yearbook revealed him wearing blackface and a Ku Klux Klan costume. Northam apologized for his actions but refused to resign, despite calls from both Democrats and Republicans.
During his time in office, Northam has prioritized healthcare, education, and gun control. He has expanded Medicaid, raised teacher salaries, and implemented universal background checks for gun purchases. He has also worked to address the COVID-19 pandemic by promoting mask-wearing, social distancing, and vaccination.
Family Life
Northam has been married to Pam Thomas since 1987. They have two children, Wes and Aubrey. The family resides in Richmond, Virginia.
