Ramon Vargas, a Mexican tenor, has been awarded numerous accolades in the field of opera. Since 1999, the Austrian magazine "Festschpille" consistently ranks him as the top tenor in the world. Vargas was born in Mexico City in 1960. His passion for singing emerged at a young age when he began soloing in the male choir of the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe. He received his musical education at the Institute of Music and Arts Cardinal Miranda in Guadalupe, studying vocal technique under Antonio Lopez and Ricardo Sanchez.
In 1982, Vargas made his debut in Haydn's "Lo Speziale" in Monterrey, Mexico, and won the National Vocal Competition. In 1983, Mexican conductor Eduardo Mata gave Vargas his first significant role as Fenton in Verdi's "Falstaff," and in 1984, Vargas performed as Don Ottavio in Mozart's "Don Giovanni." In 1986, Vargas won the Enrico Caruso Tenor Competition in Milan. That same year, he moved to Austria, where he completed his training at the Vocal School of the Vienna State Opera under the guidance of Leo Muller.
In 1990, Vargas chose the path of a "free artist." From that point on, his dizzying career as a world-renowned tenor took off. He participated in major opera festivals and performed on renowned opera stages worldwide, such as Lorenzo in "Fra Diavolo" in Zurich, Edgardo in "Lucia di Lammermoor" in Marseille, Tamino in "The Magic Flute" at the Vienna State Opera, Stabat Mater Rossini in Paris (Opéra Bastille), and Aménophis in "Moses in Egypt" in Bologna.
In Milan, Vargas had a fateful encounter with the renowned musicologist and pedagogue Rodolfo Celletti. Under his guidance, the young tenor mastered new roles. By 1992, Vargas received an invitation from the Metropolitan Opera to perform as Edgardo in "Lucia di Lammermoor," replacing Luciano Pavarotti. In 1993, he made his debut at La Scala, and in 1994-1995, he opened the season at the Metropolitan Opera.
Today, Ramon Vargas is arguably the most famous tenor on the planet. His fantastic voice can be heard in major opera houses around the world, including La Scala ("La Traviata," "Falstaff," "Rigoletto"), Vienna State Opera ("L'elisir d'amore," "Lucia di Lammermoor"), Covent Garden ("La Traviata," "Rigoletto"), Opéra Bastille ("Rigoletto," "La Traviata"), Metropolitan Opera ("Rigoletto," "La Cenerentola," "L'elisir d'amore," "Lucia di Lammermoor," "La Bohème"), and many others.
Vargas has performed over fifty leading roles, mostly in the bel canto and romantic repertoire (Mozart, Rossini, Donizetti, Bellini). He presents himself to the public not only as a traditional opera performer but also as a brilliant concert artist. His concert repertoire impresses with its versatility, including classical Italian songs, romantic German Lieder, and songs by French, Spanish, and Mexican composers of the 19th and 20th centuries.
In 1999, BMG/RCA signed Vargas as their exclusive artist. He has been honored with numerous awards in the field of opera, and since 1999, the Austrian magazine "Festschpille" has consistently ranked him as the top tenor in the world.
