Early Life and Education

Ramon Magsaysay was born on August 31, 1907, in Iba, Zambales, Philippines. He came from a humble background, with his father being a schoolteacher and his mother a blacksmith. Magsaysay pursued his education at the University of the Philippines and the Jose Rizal College in Manila, graduating in 1933.

Occupation and Military Service

Prior to World War II, Magsaysay worked as a mechanic, foreman, and eventually general manager of a transportation company. In December 1941, when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, he joined the US Army. He served until the fall of Bataan in April 1942, after which he became a guerrilla leader in central Luzon.

Political Career

In 1945, Magsaysay was appointed governor of Zambales, and in 1946, he was elected to the Philippine Congress. In 1950, he was named Secretary of National Defense by President Elpidio Quirino. During his tenure, he reformed the military and suppressed the Huk rebellion.

Presidency

In 1952, Magsaysay ran for president as a member of the Nacionalista Party. He won the election in November 1953, becoming the third president of the Republic of the Philippines. His administration focused on land reform, rural development, and anti-corruption measures. Magsaysay also signed a peace treaty and reparations agreement with Japan.

Reform and Death

In 1955, the legislature granted Magsaysay emergency powers to break up large estates and distribute land to small farmers. The Nacionalista Party gained control of Congress, further strengthening Magsaysay's position. However, opposition to his reforms remained. Magsaysay died in a plane crash near Cebu on March 17, 1957. His sudden death cut short his promising presidency and left a lasting legacy in Philippine politics.
