Early Life and Education

Randall Kirk was born in the United States in 1954 to a military family. As a result of his father's service in the U.S. Air Force, Kirk moved frequently as a child, attending various schools and adjusting to new social circles.

Career in Pharmaceutical Industry

After graduating from Dublin High School, Kirk embarked on his career. He ventured into automotive and motorcycle sales while concurrently pursuing his education at Radford College, graduating in 1976. He later earned a graduate degree from the University of Virginia.

Founding General Injectibles and Vaccines

In 1983, Kirk co-founded General Injectibles and Vaccines with John Gregory. The company focused on distributing pharmaceuticals to hospitals and pharmacies. By the late 1980s, the business had grown significantly, leading to a dissolution of the partnership. Kirk retained his role as CEO of General Injectibles and Vaccines.

Sale of General Injectibles and Vaccines

In 1998, Kirk sold General Injectibles and Vaccines for $90 million. He invested a portion of the proceeds in River Pharmaceuticals, where he had served as Chairman of the Board since 1996. In 2001, he became the CEO and President of River Pharmaceuticals.

Founding Third Security and NewVa Capital Partners

In 1999, Kirk established the investment company Third Security. Five years later, he partnered with Carilion Health System and Virginia Tech to create the fund NewVa Capital Partners, which aimed to support business growth in Virginia.

Business and Philanthropy

Beyond his involvement in General Injectibles and Vaccines, Kirk participated in the management of companies such as Scios Inc., Clinical Data Inc., and Harvest. He also supported public education through a $1 million donation to Radford University in 1999. Kirk served on the board of the Radford University Foundation, Inc. from 1998 onward.

Personal Wealth and Philanthropy

As of 2008, Kirk's estimated net worth was $1.6 billion, ranking him 743rd on the Forbes list of the world's richest people. He owned a 232-acre estate in Bellspring Farm.
