Yusuf Hamied: Pioneer in Affordable Healthcare

Yusuf Hamied, a prominent Indian scientist and chairman of Cipla, is renowned for his relentless pursuit of making life-saving medicines accessible to the world's poorest. Born in Vilnius, Lithuania, to an Indian Muslim father and a Russian-speaking Jewish mother, Hamied grew up in Bombay (now Mumbai).

Education and Early Career

Hamied earned his doctorate in Chemistry from Cambridge University, where he still uses his Cambridge notebooks while working on new drugs. He also attended Cathedral and John Connon School in Bombay. One of his lifelong friends is Zubin Mehta, the world-famous conductor.

Cipla and Social Consciousness

Hamied chairs Cipla, a pharmaceutical giant founded by his father in 1935. Known for its social consciousness, Cipla challenges the business practices of Western pharmaceutical companies, ensuring affordable access to AIDS and other critical medicines for patients in the poorest countries.

Fighting AIDS and Global Health

Hamied has spearheaded efforts to eradicate AIDS in developing nations, providing patients with vital medication regardless of their ability to pay. His actions have earned him the nickname "the modern-day Robin Hood." Former Johnson & Johnson executive Ajit Dangi described Cipla in Africa as "a temple, and Dr. Hamied is the god."

Innovative Medicines

Hamied has played a significant role in developing combination therapies for HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, asthma, and other diseases primarily affecting people in developing countries. His innovations have expanded access to medication and played a crucial role in improving drug adherence.

Recognition and Legacy

The Yusuf Hamied Center opened in Cambridge in 2009 at Christ's College, Hamied's alma mater. In 2012, he received the CNN-IBN "Indian of the Year" award. Hamied's story has been featured in leading global publications and television programs, including The New York Times, Time magazine, The Guardian, Le Monde, The Economist, Financial Times, The Times, Corriere della Sera, Der Spiegel, Wired, ABC News, BBC, CNN, and CBS's 60 Minutes.
