Early Life and Career
Pete Best's mother, Mona, owned the Casbah Club in Liverpool, where the Beatles frequently played. In 1959, the Beatles invited Best to play with them, and he joined the band officially in 1960.
Touring and Recording
Best toured with the Beatles during their trips to Hamburg, Germany, from 1960-1961. He played on their first recording session for EMI in 1962.
Dismissal from the Beatles
However, George Martin, the band's producer, was dissatisfied with Best's drumming. Best was dismissed from the band in August 1962 and replaced by Ringo Starr.
Reasons for Dismissal
Beyond his drumming, Best's dismissal was also attributed to a lack of social cohesion with the other members. Best did not participate in the band's usual social activities and had different personal preferences, such as declining to adopt the band's signature hairstyle.
Public Outcry and Aftermath
Best's dismissal upset Beatles fans, with one fan famously punching Harrison in the eye. Despite his initial bitterness, Best later became a devoted fan and bought all the Beatles' records.
Financial Struggles and Redemption
After his exit from the Beatles, Best attempted a solo career without significant success. However, the release of the Anthology album in 1995, which featured recordings with Best, provided him with substantial royalties that improved his financial situation.
Public Apology
In 2007, George Martin publicly apologized to Best for his dismissal from the Beatles in 1962.
