Dr. Gamzat Makhachev: Pioneering Cardiac Surgeon in Dagestan

Early Life and Education

Gamzat Makhachev was born into a Kumyk family in Dagestan. He pursued his medical education at the Dagestan Medical Institute, graduating with honors.

Career as a Surgeon

Dr. Makhachev dedicated his career to cardiac surgery, becoming a renowned expert in the field. In 1958, he performed the first open-heart surgery for congenital heart defects in Dagestan. He served as the editor of the cardiosurgery section of the Great Soviet Encyclopedia.

Contributions to Surgery

Throughout his career, Dr. Makhachev authored over 400 scientific papers and 12 books. His research and innovative techniques significantly advanced the field of cardiac surgery. He was an active participant in the World War II.

Memberships and Honors

Dr. Makhachev was elected as a corresponding member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (1974) and an honorary member of surgical societies in Azerbaijan and Bulgaria. He was also a member of the International Society of Surgeons, the International Society of Cardiovascular and Vascular Surgeons, and the International Society of Phlebology.
