Zaqariya

Zaqariya was a prominent figure in the religious extremist and terrorist underground movement in Kabardino-Balkaria. He was a commander in the so-called Southwest (Chegemsky) Sector of the United Vilayat of Kabarda, Balkaria, and Karachay within the Caucasus Emirate. He was the youngest among the amirs of the KBC.

Federal Fugitive

Zaqariya was declared a federal fugitive for his alleged involvement in the murders of religious figures, government officials, and law enforcement officers. He was directly implicated in the killing of ethnographer Arsen Tsipinov, which he later explained in one of his video addresses.

Physical Handicap

Zaqariya had lost his right eye in May 2010 when his car was blown up during a special operation against him and his associates. However, he managed to escape and rejoin his comrades.

Demise in Progress

On the night of April 29, 2011, in the village of Progress in Stavropol Krai, the FSB and the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the North Caucasus Federal District carried out a successful special operation that resulted in the elimination of almost all the leaders of the KBC underground. Among those killed were Asker Dzhappuev, Kazbek Tashaev, and Shameyev. The National Anti-Terrorist Committee confirmed Zaqariya's death.

Genetic Confirmation

To verify the identities of those killed in the operation, genetic analysis was performed on the corpses. Shameyev's DNA matched that of his mother but not that of his father. The website of the republic's armed underground confirmed his demise.
