Early Life and Artistic Beginnings
Ravi Varma (full name: Ravi Varma Koil Thampuran) was born on April 29, 1848, in the royal palace of Kilimanoor, near Thiruvananthapuram (present-day Kerala), into the aristocratic family ruling the state of Travancore. From a young age, Varma displayed remarkable artistic talent, which was nurtured by his uncle.
Artistic Education
At the age of 14, Varma began studying traditional Indian painting at the royal palace. In 1863, he received a month of training in European painting from Theodore Jensen, a British portrait painter invited to the court.
International Breakthrough
In 1873, Varma participated in an international art exhibition in Madras, where his painting "A Nair Lady at Her Toilet" won the top prize. His fame soared after an exhibition in Vienna later that year, where he again secured the grand prize.
Recognition as "Raja Ravi Varma"
Although Varma never officially held the title of Raja, he became widely known in Europe as Raja Ravi Varma, the Prince-Painter. This was due to his royal lineage and the grandeur of his artwork, which often depicted scenes from Indian epics such as the Mahabharata and Ramayana.
