Biography of Bernardo Torrens

Bernardo Torrens is a Spanish hyperrealist artist who was born in Madrid, Spain in 1957. He is known for his works that showcase the distinct contouring and multiple meanings of his subjects, which have always been a hallmark of Spanish realism. This artistic canon in Spain was established in the 17th century by artists such as Zurbarán, Ribera, and Velázquez.

Spanish realists focused their attention on a few objects or a single isolated object in their paintings. These objects, depicted with great care and exquisite detail by Spanish artists, possess a certain mystical power and strength in the works of Sevillian masters. The same qualities can be found in the images depicted in Torrens' hyperrealistic paintings.

The subjects of his paintings are primarily men and women, detached from their immediate environment, and in this sense, they resemble characters from medieval morality plays. In Torrens' paintings, they are often portrayed naked, in the prime of their youth.
