Indian Boy's Remarkable Recovery after Extraction of 526 Excess Teeth
Dental surgeons in the Indian city of Chennai, Tamil Nadu, recently had the opportunity to assist an extraordinary patient — a seven-year-old schoolboy from Tiruvallur known affectionately as 'Toothy'.
Unprecedented Extraction
During a complex surgery, 526 surplus teeth were removed from Ravi's jaw. The excess teeth, according to medical experts, could have developed due to genetic or environmental factors. Despite the discomfort caused by the abnormal growth, Ravi's regular teeth have grown without any issues. However, doctors predict that his molars will require transplantation by the age of 16.
Journey to Recovery
Ravi initially presented with swelling on the right side of his lower jaw. "Tumour-like structures were preventing the growth of normal permanent molar teeth in the affected area," explained P. Senthilnathan, Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
"X-rays and CT scans revealed multiple rudimentary teeth embedded in a sac-like structure. It took five hours to extract all the tiny teeth from the sac," added Senthilnathan. "The entire mass weighed a mere 200 grams."
An Early Intervention
Fortunately, the surgery was performed at an early stage of Ravi's development, minimizing the impact on his oral tissues. The removal of the sac-like structure was straightforward.
"The patient was operated under general anesthesia, and the growth was removed within an hour and a half. The boy did not require any reconstruction of his jaw," noted Senthilnathan.
Ongoing Research
Presently, researchers are exploring a potential connection between radiation from mobile phone towers and the anomalous tooth growth experienced by Ravi.
Family's Relief
His father, S. Prabhu Doss, expressed his initial doubts about the surgery after seeing the CT scan results. However, he acknowledged that inaction was not an option. The procedure, which was performed free of charge on July 11, was ultimately a success, bringing much-needed relief to Ravi and his family.
