Ray Meagher, an Australian character actor, is best known for his role as Alf Stewart in the soap opera 'Home and Away'. Born on July 4, 1944, in Roma, Queensland, Meagher grew up on a sheep station and attended a boarding school in Gold Coast. He was a talented athlete and represented his school in rugby and other sports events.

Early Career

Meagher started his acting career in 1973 with a minor role in the TV series 'Matlock Police'. He then appeared in several films, including 'Breaker Morant' (1980), 'The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith' (1978), 'Newsfront' (1978), 'My Brilliant Career' (1979), and 'The Shiralee' (1987). He also had a cameo in the 1979 war comedy 'The Odd Angry Shot'. On television, his first regular role was in the soap opera 'Number 96' in 1977, followed by multiple appearances in 'Prisoner' and 'A Country Practice'.

Meagher is also known for his participation in traditional pantomimes in the United Kingdom during Christmas. In 2008, he played Abanazar in 'Aladdin' at the Anvil Theatre in Basingstoke, and in 2009, he portrayed Captain Hook in 'Peter Pan' in Tunbridge Wells.
