Raymond Samuel Tomlinson was an American programmer who revolutionized communication with the invention of email. Born in 1941 in New York, USA, Tomlinson attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering at the age of 22. He continued his studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he obtained a Master's degree in the same field.

Tomlinson began his impressive career as a computer engineer at BBN Technologies, a company working on the development of ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network) for the US Department of Defense. ARPANET, funded by the government, aimed to connect various research organizations throughout the United States and can be considered a precursor to the Internet.

Although creating email was not a specific request, Tomlinson worked on his own project, initially as a simple experiment. He wanted to find a way to send messages between two computers, as previous forms of electronic communication only allowed messages to be sent between users of the same computer or to be printed out from designated mailboxes. Tomlinson modified and combined existing programs to create innovative software called "SNDMSG."

Using the symbol '@' to separate the recipient's name from their location, Tomlinson elevated the usefulness of computers to a new level. He sent the first email message to a computer in the same room to test his program, but the exact content of the message is not remembered. However, Tomlinson speculates that it was something mundane like "QWERTYUIOP."

Tomlinson's contribution to email did not stop there. He became a co-author of the standards RFC-561 for message encoding in 1973, which defined fields such as "from," "to," and "date" that are still used in email addresses today.

In recognition of his significant impact on the world, Tomlinson was inducted into the Internet Hall of Fame alongside other computer pioneers like Vint Cerf, Tim Berners-Lee, and Van Jacobson. Tomlinson received numerous awards throughout his career, including the George R. Stibitz Computer Pioneer Award, the Webby Award for lifetime achievement, and the Innovation Award from Discover magazine.
