Geir Ivarsøy: Pioneer of the Web
Early Life and Career at TelenorGeir Ivarsøy, a Norwegian programmer, rose to prominence as a leading developer at Opera Software, renowned for the Opera browser. Prior to his time at Opera, he and Jon Stephenson von Tetzchner collaborated at Telenor's research division, developing a software called MultiTorg Opera.
Founding of Opera Software
When Telenor discontinued the project, Geir and Jon acquired the rights to their creation. In 1995, they founded Opera Software and continued to enhance the Opera browser. Despite facing fierce competition, Opera quickly gained popularity.
Growth and Expansion
Under Geir's leadership, Opera Software's team expanded to over 500 employees after relocating to Oslo. He remained actively involved in the company's development, despite stepping down from the board of directors in January 2004. In July 2005, he was elected to the company's nomination committee.
Legacy and Tribute
Geir's life was tragically cut short when he passed away on March 9, 2006, after a courageous battle with cancer. His legacy lives on through Opera's success and the dedication that adorns the browser's "About" page (from version 9 onwards): "In memory of Geir Ivarsøy."
