The Notorious Egyptian Serial Killers Raya and Sakina
Raya and Sakina, along with their husbands, were the most infamous Egyptian serial killers who were convicted of murder. All four of them were found guilty and sentenced to death on May 16th, 1921. Raya and Sakina became the first Egyptian women to be executed in modern Egypt.
The Murders and Investigation
The four houses where the murders were committed were located near Mansheya Square. Most of the victims were targeted in this area. They began killing women in Labban, a suburb of Alexandria, in the early 20th century. The police were perplexed by the increasing reports of missing women. Upon detailed investigation, it was established that each missing woman had gold jewelry and a large sum of money. Furthermore, it was discovered that almost every woman who disappeared was last seen with a woman named Sakina. Despite being repeatedly interrogated, Sakina managed to evade any suspicion.
The Discovery
On the morning of December 11th, 1920, a passerby discovered human remains near the road. The body was dismembered and mutilated beyond recognition, except for the long hair that immediately revealed the victim's gender. A piece of black fabric and striped black and white socks were also found near the body, but these items did not help in identifying the remains. At around the same time, another individual reported finding human remains under the flooring while repairing the water pipes. These two cases, along with the fact that all the missing women had money, became the sole evidence that murders had occurred in Labban.
The Trial and Execution
After an extensive investigation, it was revealed that Raya and Sakina had rented the house where the body was buried during the period when women and girls started disappearing. Raya and Sakina, along with their husbands, were convicted of murder. On May 16th, 1921, all four of them were sentenced to death. Raya and Sakina became the first Egyptian women to be executed in modern Egypt.
The Cultural Impact
The story of Raya and Sakina has inspired numerous books and art works. For example, in 1953, Salah Abu Seif directed the film 'Raya and Sakina' ('Raya wa Sekina') starring Shoukry Sarhan, Farid Shawki, and Samira Ahmed. In 1983, another film of the same name was produced, followed by a TV series in 2005. There is also a television program titled 'Raya and Sakina', featuring Ghada Abdel-Razek and Hala Fakher.
