Alain-Claude Bilie-By-Nzé
Alain-Claude Bilie-By-Nzé is a Gabonese politician who has served as prime minister of Gabon twice: from February 27, 2012 to January 24, 2014 and again since September 7, 2023. He was born in Oyem, Gabon, and studied in France.
Early Political Career
Bilie-By-Nzé began his political career in Gabon's government as Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries, where he focused on developing the country's rural areas.
First Term as Prime Minister
Following the December 2011 parliamentary elections, in which the ruling Gabonese Democratic Party won a majority of seats, Prime Minister Paul Biyoge Mba resigned on February 13, 2012. President Ali Bongo appointed Bilie-By-Nzé as prime minister on February 27, 2012. This appointment was seen as a significant shift in Gabonese politics, as the prime ministerial post had traditionally been held by Fang people from the Estuaire province. Bilie-By-Nzé, while also Fang, hails from the Woleu-Ntem province.
Two Unsuccessful Presidential Campaigns
After leaving office, Bilie-By-Nzé ran for president twice against Bongo, in 2016 and 2023. He lost both elections, receiving less than 0.5% of the vote each time.
Second Term as Prime Minister
Following the 2023 Gabonese coup d'état, Bilie-By-Nzé was reappointed as prime minister of the transitional government by interim president Brice Oligui on September 7.
