Early Life and Education

Rebekka Horn, a renowned German artist and filmmaker, was born in 1944. Her atypical upbringing saw her raised by a Romanian nanny, a former artist, who introduced her to drawing at the tender age of 18 months. Horn's formative years were largely spent in boarding schools.

Despite her parents' desire for her to pursue economics, Horn defied their wishes and enrolled in art studies at age 19. In 1964, a severe lung infection forced her into a year-long hospital stay. Upon her release, Horn's health remained fragile, requiring extensive antibiotic treatment and prolonged periods of bedrest. However, her artistic drive persisted, and she turned to simpler materials, such as colored pencils, which became her preferred medium.

After graduating from Hamburg's State Art College, Horn interned at London's Saint Martin's School of Art in 1971. Her first solo exhibition took place in Berlin's Galerie René Block in 1973.

Performance Art Career

Horn's involvement in performance art emerged in the late 1960s and early 1970s. She became a notable participant in Kassel's renowned Documenta exhibition, contributing to its iterations in 1972, 1977, 1982, and 1992.
