Redoine Faïd: The 'Hollywood Gangster' Who Defied Gravity
Early Life and Criminal RootsRedoine Faïd, the infamous French criminal known as the "Hollywood Gangster," was born to Algerian immigrants. From a young age, Faïd displayed a fascination with the criminal underworld and the glamorous portrayal of gangsters in Hollywood films.
Embracing the Hollywood Persona
Faïd's obsession with Hollywood movies led him to adopt the personas of notorious villains, including Neil McCauley from "Heat" and Tony Montana from "Scarface." He became known for wearing a hockey mask during robberies, mirroring McCauley's character.
Notorious Heists and Bank Robberies
Faïd's criminal career spanned decades and involved a string of audacious heists. In 1995, he took hostages and robbed a bank in Creil. A year later, he and his accomplices targeted an information company in d'Evry. In 1997, they attacked an armored truck in Villepinte.
Prison and Redemption
Faïd was eventually apprehended in Switzerland in 1998 and sentenced to 31 years in prison. After a decade behind bars, he convinced authorities of his transformation and was released in 2008. However, his newfound freedom proved short-lived as he was arrested again in 2011.
2013 Prison Escape
In 2013, Faïd staged a daring escape from the Sequedin prison. Using explosives, he blew open five gates and held five prison guards and another person hostage. He fled in a getaway car that was later found abandoned near Lille.
Recapture and Second Escape
Faïd was recaptured six weeks later in a cheap hotel outside Paris. In April 2018, he was sentenced to 25 years in prison for his involvement in the 2010 robbery attempt that resulted in the death of police officer Aurélie Fouquet. Despite being held in solitary confinement, Faïd managed to orchestrate a second escape in 2018.
Helicopter Getaway
On July 1, 2018, three armed accomplices arrived at the Réau prison and demanded Faïd's immediate release. A helicopter then landed in the prison courtyard, allowing Faïd's brother to enter the building and meet him in a visitation room. Two of the accomplices neutralized the security cameras while the other cut through the doors and bars, creating a path to freedom for Faïd. The helicopter then picked up Faïd and his accomplices and flew them away.
Ongoing Investigation
The search for Faïd is ongoing throughout the Île-de-France region. The helicopter used in the escape was later found burned in Gonesse, while Faïd was reportedly seen transferring to a black Renault and then a van.
