Early Career Success

Regan Smith emerged as a prodigious swimmer at a young age. At the age of 15, she made her international debut at the 2015 Junior World Championships in Budapest, reaching the final in the 100m backstroke.

A month later, she triumphed at the Junior Pan American Games in Indianapolis, winning the 100m backstroke with a new junior world record (59.11) and claiming first place in the 200m backstroke.

First Senior Medals

In 2016, Smith made her first podium appearance at a senior competition. At the Pan Pacific Championships, she earned a bronze medal in the 200m backstroke.

2019 World Championship Dominance

At the 2019 World Aquatics Championships in Gwangju, Smith became one of the event's breakout stars. On June 26, she broke her own junior world record in the 200m backstroke preliminaries (2.06.01). In the semifinals, she set a new world record, surpassing Missy Franklin's time by 0.71 seconds (2.03.35).

In the final, Smith delivered another impressive performance (2.03.69) to clinch her first World Championship title. On the final day of the meet, she contributed to the gold medal in the 4x100m medley relay, marking two world records in the process: She became the first woman to swim under 58 seconds in the 100m backstroke leg (57.57), and the United States team improved the world mark by 1.15 seconds (3.50.40).

Olympic Success and Ongoing Dominance

Smith continued her remarkable career with two Olympic medals in the 2020 Tokyo Games. She claimed a silver medal in the 100m backstroke and a gold medal as part of the 4x100m medley relay team.
