Reggie Dwayne Johnson, an American professional boxer, was born on August 28, 1966, in Houston, Texas. He began his professional career in 1984 and competed in the light heavyweight division as a southpaw. Standing at a height of 178 cm, Johnson gained recognition in the boxing world through his impressive performances.
Early Career
In the early years of his career, Johnson faced his only loss against Adam George. However, in 1991, he gained fame by defeating James Toney, the undefeated middleweight champion known as "Lights Out." Johnson knocked Toney down in the second round, but the split decision victory ultimately went to Toney.
Championship Victories
In April 1992, Johnson became the WBA middleweight world champion by defeating Steve Collins, an Irish boxer known as "The Celtic Warrior." He defended his title successfully and even defeated Lamar Parks, who was previously unbeaten, in October 1992. However, he lost his championship belt to another southpaw, John David Jackson, in a fight that took place in Denver, Colorado.
Johnson faced challenges in his career, including two losses to Argentine boxer Jorge Fernando Castro in his attempts to regain the WBA middleweight title. Despite these setbacks, Johnson moved up to the light heavyweight division and won the IBF light heavyweight world championship by knocking out William Guthrie in the fifth round.
Later Career and Legal Troubles
Johnson defended his title twice before facing a loss against Roy Jones Jr. in June 1999. He retired from boxing after a fight against Antonio Tarver in January 2002 but made a comeback in 2005 for one bout. In February 2008, Johnson secured a victory over Julio Cesar Gonzalez, earning him the IBA light heavyweight title.
Unfortunately, Johnson's boxing career was marred by legal troubles. In March 2008, he was convicted of second-degree theft for stealing $120,000 that was meant to be allocated for children affected by hurricanes Rita and Katrina. Johnson had promised to establish children's camps through his company, 'Pugilistic Drama, Inc.,' but failed to do so. This was not his first encounter with the law, as he had previous convictions for theft, one of which involved the FBI.
On October 22, 2010, Reggie Johnson was sentenced to 12 years in prison for his crimes.
