Early Life and Career
Rex Todhunter Stout(December 1, 1886 – October 27, 1975) was an American author and publicist. Born into a Quaker family in Noblesville, Indiana, Stout joined the Navy at the age of 18 and began writing psychological novels influenced by the works of William Faulkner and F. Scott Fitzgerald.
Naval Service and Writing Career
A highlight of Stout's youth was serving on the yacht of Theodore Roosevelt. He later worked in the hotel business, rising from a clerk to a hotel manager.
Public Activism and Literary Success
Beyond his literary pursuits, Stout was an active public figure. He served as president of the American Detective Club and participated in anti-fascist organizations, contributing to anti-fascist radio broadcasts.
The Nero Wolfe Mysteries
Stout's greatest claim to fame came from his 46 detective novels featuring the private investigators Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin. This duo, similar to Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson or Hercule Poirot and Captain Hastings, became a beloved and enduring literary pair. Unlike other partnerships, however, the narrative is told from Goodwin's perspective, giving readers a unique insight into the enigmatic Wolfe.
Nero Wolfe, an orchid enthusiast and connoisseur of fine cuisine, and his witty, resourceful, and fearless assistant, Archie Goodwin, solved complex puzzles with their keen analytical abilities, life experience, hard work, and integrity. The series sold over 10 million copies worldwide.
