Johann Christian Senckenberg
Early Life and EducationJohann Christian Senckenberg was born in Vienna on May 23, 1751, to Heinrich Christian Senckenberg and Sophie Elisabeth von Palm. In 1768, he enrolled at the University of Göttingen, where he studied law and history. He later continued his studies at the University of Strasbourg.
Legal Career
In 1772, Senckenberg began practicing law at the Imperial Chamber Court in Wetzlar. However, he was forced to leave this position due to political reasons. In 1774, he traveled to Italy. In 1775, he became an expert for the Hessian government.
Suspicion and Exile
In 1778, Senckenberg returned to Vienna and came under suspicion by the authorities. After a prolonged imprisonment, he was expelled from Austria and returned to Hesse. From 1780 to 1784, he served as an advocate for the Hessian government. Afterward, he remained in Hesse as a private citizen.
Legacy
Senckenberg died on December 18, 1800, leaving behind a significant legacy. He bequeathed his entire library to the University Library and University of Hesse. Senckenberg continued the work of Gebhardi's "Deutsche Reichsgeschichte," contributing volumes 21-27 (Frankfurt, 1798-1799). In the field of law, he wrote the influential treatise "Meditationes maximam in partem jundicae quinque, cum mantissis quibusdain" (Wetzlar, 1789).
