Rengim Gokmen

Gürer Aykal was born on October 26, 1942, in Istanbul, Turkey. He received his first music lessons from his mother, Muazzez Gökmen, an opera singer. He then studied piano at the Ankara Conservatory under Ferhunde Erkin and composition with İlhan Baran and Ahmet Adnan Saygun.
Pursuit of Conducting
From 1975 to 1979, Aykal pursued conducting studies at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Italy, under the guidance of Franco Ferrara. In 1980, he won the Gino Marinuzzi International Conducting Competition, establishing him as a renowned conductor.
Artistic Leadership
Aykal's artistic journey included serving as the Director of the Ankara Opera House from 1984 to 1989. He subsequently became the Artistic Director of the Turkish State Opera and Ballet Theater from 1992 to 1995, and again from 2007 onwards.
Orchestral Collaborations
Concurrently, Aykal held the position of Chief Conductor of the Izmir Symphony Orchestra from 1991 to 2006. In 2006, he assumed the leadership of the Presidential Symphony Orchestra, further cementing his reputation as a prominent conductor on the world stage.
